# Do I Need to Advertise If I Already Get Work Through Word of Mouth?

By   Simon Lown  ·   3 minute read

If recommendations already bring you enough of the work you want, you do not need to advertise simply because other businesses do. The useful question is what benefit would advertising add?

Perhaps you want to reach customers beyond your existing connections, promote a particular service or become better known in an area you already cover. Those are reasons to consider advertising alongside word of mouth, not to replace it.

Start with the business you want to run, rather than the assumption that you should always be looking for more enquiries.

## Is word of mouth bringing the work you want?

Being busy and getting the work you want aren't quite the same thing.

![More of the work you want. Not just more work BannerGet more of the work you want. Not just more work.](https://phonefile.co.uk/hs-fs/hubfs/More%20of%20the%20work%20you%20want.%20Not%20just%20more%20work%20Banner.png?width=800&height=100&name=More%20of%20the%20work%20you%20want.%20Not%20just%20more%20work%20Banner.png)

You might have plenty of small jobs while wanting to take on larger projects. You might receive enquiries from further afield when you would prefer to work closer to home. Or people may know you for one service without realising what else you offer.

Think about the work you have accepted recently. Would you be happy with another six months of the same?

If there is something you would like to change, that gives your advertising a purpose beyond simply generating more calls. You can choose which services to feature and where to promote them, rather than relying entirely on what people already know you for.

## How dependent are you on particular people for recommendations?

There is a difference between receiving recommendations from a broad customer base and getting most of your introductions through one or two people.

Ask yourself:

> If the person who sends me the most work stopped recommending me tomorrow, how much would that change my diary?

![Business connected to three referral sources, with one larger source emphasised. Text reads: “Who’s driving your business? Focus on the referrals that matter most.”](https://phonefile.co.uk/hs-fs/hubfs/Local%20Marketing%20Relationship%20Infographic.png?width=250&height=250&name=Local%20Marketing%20Relationship%20Infographic.png)For example, imagine a tradesperson who receives regular introductions from one builder. That relationship might suit both businesses very well. But if the builder retires or changes the type of projects they take on, those introductions could change too.

That relationship is valuable but advertising gives you a separate way to reach potential customers.

## Who can discover you outside your existing network?

Picture someone living within your service area who needs exactly what you offer but does not know any of your customers.

How would they find you?

They might search online or ask neighbours. Local advertising gives them another way to discover your business, see what you offer and find your contact details.

For example, an advert in The PhoneFile places those details in a town edition covering an area you want to serve. Its purpose is different from a personal recommendation: it introduces your business without requiring an existing customer to mention you first.

Being well established does not mean everyone nearby knows what you offer.

## Could advertising support the recommendations you already receive?

You do not have to choose between advertising and word of mouth.

![Speech bubble plus a newspaper advert, with the words “Recommended. And remembered.](https://phonefile.co.uk/hs-fs/hubfs/Recommended.%20And%20remembered%20v3.png?width=250&height=250&name=Recommended.%20And%20remembered%20v3.png)Imagine someone recommends your business to a neighbour. The neighbour later notices your advert, sees that you offer the service they need and keeps your details.

In that example, the recommendation provides the introduction, while the advert supplies a clear description and a convenient way to contact you.

If you have introduced a service or changed your coverage area, let existing customers know. Your advertising can carry the same message to people who do not already know your business.

## What if you are already fully booked?

If you have no room for more work, generating additional enquiries need not be your priority.

But your plans may extend beyond the jobs already in your diary. You might be taking bookings for later in the year or preparing to introduce a service once current projects are complete.

![Fully booked now\_ Plan for what’s next.](https://phonefile.co.uk/hs-fs/hubfs/Fully%20booked%20now_%20Plan%20for%20what%E2%80%99s%20next..png?width=800&height=100&name=Fully%20booked%20now_%20Plan%20for%20what%E2%80%99s%20next..png)

Make the advert fit that timetable. If you are booking work for a future period, say so rather than suggesting immediate availability.

That gives you a way to promote what comes next while being clear about when you can take it on.

## What would you want an advert to add?

Before choosing an advertising format or booking space, finish this sentence:

> I want advertising to help my business…

Your answer might be:

- Become visible to people outside my existing customer network.
- Promote a particular service.
- Establish a presence in an area I want to serve.
- Rely less heavily on introductions from one source.

Each gives the advert a purpose. It also helps you decide what deserves space in it and whether it will be seen in the area you want to serve.

Word of mouth and advertising have different jobs. Recommendations introduce you through someone who knows your work. Advertising lets you choose the message and put it in front of people beyond those connections.
