# Why consistency matters in local advertising

By   Simon Lown  ·   5 minute read

When an advert brings in the kind of work you want, you have a reason to use it again. The next decision is how to build on that response—not necessarily how to come up with something different.

That can mean continuing to advertise in the same area, keeping a recognisable design or developing a message that customers are responding to. You can still update the advert as your business changes, without treating every booking as a fresh start.

The difficulty is knowing when to stay with an approach and when to change it. You might feel ready for a new advert while enquiries are still coming in. Or you might keep renewing because it is easier than reviewing whether the advertising is doing its job.

That is where testing and review help. They give you a basis for deciding what to continue, what to adjust and where to put your budget over the longer term.

## What does consistency mean in local advertising?

There are two parts to it:

1. Where and when your business appears.
2. How you choose to present it.

A consistent presence means planning how you will keep reaching the people you want to work for, rather than deciding what to do from scratch each time you advertise. You might return to the same local publication or plan leaflet deliveries in an area you want to build business in. The timing and budget can still reflect your workload, capacity and seasonal demand.

A consistent identity means keeping your business recognisable across those appearances: its name, visual style and the main message about what it offers.

A gardener, for example, might promote regular maintenance in spring and garden clearance in autumn, while keeping the same layout, colours and emphasis on tidy, well-maintained gardens. The advert gives customers a different reason to get in touch without introducing the business all over again.

An ongoing presence gives people more than one opportunity to encounter your business. A household may not need a gardener when the spring advert appears but have clearance work to arrange in autumn. Continuing to advertise gives the business another opportunity to be considered when the service is relevant.

## Why change an advert that is still doing its job?

Once an advert is bringing in suitable work at a cost that makes sense for your business, you have something to build on. Keeping it running lets you concentrate on delivering that work rather than repeatedly developing a new advertising approach.

![An advert does not need to be new to remain effective - text banner](https://phonefile.co.uk/hs-fs/hubfs/An%20advert%20does%20not%20need%20to%20be%20new%20to%20remain%20effective..png?width=800&height=100&name=An%20advert%20does%20not%20need%20to%20be%20new%20to%20remain%20effective..png)

You have worked on the wording, checked the design and seen it each time you book. But your familiarity with the advert tells you little about how familiar it is to a prospective customer. Someone seeing it for the first time does not know whether you approved it last week or last year.

Before making a change, identify what you want it to achieve. Do you want to promote a more profitable service, attract work closer to home or replace jobs you no longer want to take on? Each gives the revision a purpose—and something to review afterwards.

If the only concern is that the advert feels old, ask whether anything has changed for the customer.

- Is the service still relevant?
- Is the information accurate?
- Are you still happy with the work it brings?

Let those answers guide the next booking, rather than how long you have been looking at the advert.

## Does consistency mean running exactly the same advert?

No. You can keep an established approach while changing what the advert asks customers to notice.

You might retain your business name, colours and main service message while updating:

- A seasonal service or offer.
- The photographs used to show your work.
- Your availability or contact details.
- The type of enquiry you want to encourage.

The value of retaining a recognisable approach has also been examined in advertising research. System1’s *Compound Creativity* study, using data from the Institute of Practitioners in Advertising, examined more than 4,000 adverts from 56 brands over five years. More creatively consistent brands tended to report stronger brand and business effects, including awareness, sales and profit gains. The study covered major-brand campaigns rather than local directory advertising, but it offers useful support for maintaining a recognisable approach over time.

The same distinction applies when making improvements. If you want to find out whether a different headline attracts more suitable enquiries, you do not also have to replace the colours, layout and photographs. Keeping the other elements stable gives you a clearer basis for judging that change.

**Consistency** leaves room to improve the advert. You do not have to choose between leaving everything untouched and starting again.

## How do you decide whether an approach is worth continuing?

Look at the work it brings, not just the number of enquiries. Consider what it costs to win that work, the profit it leaves and whether you have the capacity to take on more.

A simple record can help you judge that by noting:

- What you advertised, where it appeared and what it cost.
- How new customers said they found you.
- Which enquiries became jobs.
- Whether the value and type of work justified the spend.

Asking “How did you hear about us?” is a useful starting point, but the answer may not tell the whole story. Someone could notice your printed advert, search for your business online and then describe Google as the source. Record what you know without forcing every enquiry into a definite category.

![Hand writing in an open diary on a wooden desk, with the words “Look at the results in context.](https://phonefile.co.uk/hs-fs/hubfs/Look%20at%20the%20result%20in%20context..png?width=250&height=250&name=Look%20at%20the%20result%20in%20context..png)Review the results alongside what was happening in the business. Were you available to take the work? Did you respond to enquiries? Were you advertising a seasonal service outside its busiest period? That context matters when deciding whether the advert needs changing or whether something else affected the outcome.

You do not need a perfect account of every customer’s journey. You need enough information to make a **reasoned decision** about your next booking, rather than relying on how busy the phone felt or whether you remember one particularly good job.

If the picture is unclear, identify what you need to record or investigate before the next review.

## When should you keep going, and when should you change something?

Change the part that needs attention rather than treating a disappointing result as a reason to replace the whole approach.

If enquiries are coming from the right area but concern work you no longer want, start with the service message. If customers want the service but you cannot fit them in, review when you advertise and what availability the advert suggests before rewriting the service message.

You can also keep an approach while changing how much you invest in it. A business with a full diary might maintain a smaller advertising presence or focus on a particular service. Another with capacity to grow might increase support for an advert that is already producing suitable work.

Where you do make a change, give it a **purpose**. “Promote more regular maintenance work” gives you something clearer to assess than “freshen up the advert”. Keep a copy of the previous version and note what you changed and when, so the next review does not depend on memory.

Continuing, adjusting and stopping are all available decisions. The aim is to avoid moving between them simply because one booking was quiet or a new idea caught your attention.

## Can you carry what works from online advertising into print?

Yes—as a starting point, rather than a guarantee of the same response.

Consistency can extend across advertising channels, too. If a particular service or offer is attracting suitable enquiries online, you have a reason to try that message in print. You do not need a completely different proposition simply because you are using a different advertising format.

The presentation may need more adjustment. An online advert might lead to a page explaining the service, while a printed advert needs to make sense without that extra step. Keep the main benefit clear and give the reader enough information to decide whether to contact you.

![Gardening adverts on a smartphone and in an open booklet, using matching green-and-cream branding and the same garden photograph.](https://phonefile.co.uk/hs-fs/hubfs/online%20and%20offline%20ads%20in%20harmony.png?width=450&height=300&name=online%20and%20offline%20ads%20in%20harmony.png)

It is also worth separating the message from the audience. An online campaign aimed at people searching for a specific service reaches them in a different situation from a leaflet delivered to local households. A different response does not necessarily mean the message is weaker; the targeting and circumstances have changed too.

Carry across what you have learned, adapt it to the format and review the results. **Consistency** does not require identical adverts—it means your advertising continues to present a coherent business wherever someone encounters it.

## What should stay consistent in your next advert?

Start with what you have learned from the advertising you have already done. Which services attracted suitable enquiries? Which areas brought work you want more of? What would you keep if you were booking again today?

Use those answers to plan your next appearance. You might continue with the same advert, update one part or put more support behind a message that is producing results. You do not need a new idea for every booking.
